Lucky by Alice Sebold

I love Alice Sebold's books. In "The Lovely Bones", she tells the story of a young girl who is raped and killed. In "Lucky", you figure out where he inspiration came from. This is the story of how Alice Sebold was raped as a Freshman in College, and how she learned to heal mentally, emotionally, and physically from the trauma. This is a great book that promotes rape awareness at the same time as entertaining you with an autobiographical story that will have you turning the pages at the speed of light. If you are an Alice Sebold fan, this story will be the perfect read for when you want to understand her complex writing. I think every girl, if not everyone, should read this book.

Reason for Grade: The beginning of this book gave me chills. The author describes everything that happened during the rape in detail so sharp that you feel pain along with her. The rape details, however, are very important to the story. The rapist has intercourse with her, puts his whole fist into her vagina, and makes her give him a blo job. It is very disturbing. I almost put the book down because I was about to cry, but it's important that you read that part if you want to fully understand what she went through. Don't just read that part, or read everything but it. Alice Sebold is really negative about sex in general and tries to promote that it is bad for most of the book. She also tries to show the reader that sex should only be used as an escape when you are feeling horrible or that you should "just get it over with and he'll be happy". There is a lot of cussing in this book, and people charge her for being racist against black people (since her rapist was black). I recommend that no one under the age of 16 should read this book due to explicit descriptions of rape.
