The Fountain

This movie touched me more than I thought any movie would. It used quotes from the bible, historical basis in reality, and was very realistic. Some people don't understand this movie's use of symbolism and cinematography, but that's only out of ignorance and disbelief. In this move, Tommy (Hugh Jackman) is a brain surgeon using a breakthrough in neuro-technology to try to find the cure for his wife, Izzy (Rachel Weisz). Through his madness and devotion, Tommy goes on an epic journey through his mind, trying to find her cure, while the whole time, she is getting worse. Izzy, who has been writing a book this whole time leaves the end empty and tells her husband to finish it. How will Tommy finish it? The answer is haunting. This movie is something you'll never forget, but warning, it is an extreme tear jerker.

Things to take note of:
1. Though I understood this movie, few others do. You see, it took a lot of studying and self-interpretation to figure out some of the things that happen. Actually, there really is no right or wrong answer to what is going on half the time, because that was Darren Arafonsky's point when he directed it. He wanted everyone to understand it in their own way and somehow find inner peace.
2. There is an extensive amount of violence in this movie that could be considered R-rated. People are stabbed, whipped, cut, self-tattooed, self-whipped to the point of bleeding, cut so their innards show, killed, eyes stabbed out, impaled, and there is a scene where surgery is shown on a monkey's brain (thought the brain isn't seen that much, a needle is shown being pushed into the monkey's skull to inject a concoction).
3. There is some mild language on this movie and one use of the word f-k that you wouldn't really notice if you weren't paying very much attention to what the characters were saying.

This is a movie I think everyone should see who is going through a hard time in their life or has lost a loved one either to death or other reason. Those are the people who will understand this the most.

To all Hugh Jackman fans, this is probably his crowning achievement of a movie. Probably his best acting, which is a high compliment.

February Book of the Month!

This was a very scary, addictive book that is filled with suspense. I kept telling myself "Oh, I'll just read one more chapter", but Scott Sigler's gift of ending a chapter with a suspenseful key had me reading more and more, no matter how much my eyelids drooped. This book contained graphic descriptions of violence and pain that had you cringing, even after you'd put the book down and gone to sleep. One thing is for certain, this book infects your mind without hope for a cure... like you'd want one anyway.
Grade: 96%
Reason for grade: This book was captivating and horrific, like a professional horror novelist should make their story. The only thing that really kept it away from a 100% was some language like the use of the word f-k, and some provocative language describing internet porn. Also, there is a scene where a man punches a woman and says "that's the way you have to say it to her" referring to domestic violence and disrespect for women for their gender, which is sort of demeaning to females. There was few enough references that it didn't interfere with the storyline, but it still bothered me slightly. This book was still worth an A.

Just a heads up, I am starting to rate things differently. Instead of using stars, I'll use percents which can be used as a sort of "grade". I thought this method would be more effective since it gives me a wider range to pick from... so if I liked something that wasn't quite worthy of five stars or four and a half... I could give it a 97% for example.

This was a cute movie. Woody Alan was so annoying... to an extent few can fathom, but Scarlet Johansen did a good job. But, Hugh Jackman stole the show as being a beautiful, seductive bad guy with a sick, twisted mind that could only make you laugh out loud. Pretty much all of the acting sucked except his. He did a good job... pretty much just him.
