What Dreams May Come by Richard Mattheson

Chris dies in a car accident and goes to heaven, otherwise known as Summerland. While in heaven, he longs for his wife, Ann, who is still on Earth with his children. Ann, full of hurt and sorrow over the loss of her husband, kills herself by taking an overdose of sleeping pills. This decision lands her a place in Hell. Chris, determined to save his wife, travels through every circle of Hell in order to reach his wife. In the end, he must make a hard decision about whether he would live in heaven alone, or in hell with his wife. Through incarnation and every horrible nightmaric thing possible a person can think of, Chris stays with his wife, his soulmate. Will he ever be able to find a place where they can be happy forever, even in heaven?

Note: This book would have had a perfect score except for one factor. Richard Mattheson realizes he can make a novel as long as he wants to, and he sure does. There were pages where the author focused on one miniscule thing like a snake or a spider as if it were a chapter within itself. Now don't get me wrong, Richard Mattheson writes some of the best books I've ever read, but I think he tries to make his books long even when it's not necessary. This book could have probably been summarized in about 15o pages, but he made it take up 239 pages. So, just be aware you can skip over some trivial information. Mainly, if you just stick to the storyline and go away from description, you'll get the story. Once again, another beautiful story from Richard Mattheson.
